How to Pack Candles for Moving

Packing is often the most exhausting part of moving. Going through your stuff, making sure everything is packed safely in boxes and labeling each one can feel like it takes forever. It gets even trickier when you’re dealing with delicate items—like candles—that need extra care to avoid melting or breaking while you move.

Candles are a good example of something people often forget about when packing. They might not show up on your usual moving checklist but they still need to be packed carefully so they don’t melt or get damaged during the move.

Why Focus on Candles?

Most moving tips usually cover how to pack dishes, glass items or big furniture. But not many talk about the right way to pack candles during a move.

Candles are often more meaningful than we think. They bring a cozy, calming vibe to our homes. Some candles or their holders might have been passed down from family members and hold special memories. Others could be part of a holiday tradition or have religious meaning which makes them even more important.

Being extra careful when packing your candles helps make sure they reach your new home without any damage.

No matter the reason you enjoy having candles around, what really matters is making sure they get to your new home safe and sound.

Risks of Moving Candles

Understanding the risks that come with moving candles helps you pack them the right way. Since candles are made of soft wax, they can easily melt if it gets too hot or crack if they’re not packed carefully. If one melts, it can even mess up other things in the box.

You also have to be careful with candle holders. They’re often made of glass, metal or other breakable materials. If you don’t pack them tightly and safely, they can easily break while you’re moving.

How to Pack Candles

Here are some easy steps to help you pack your candles the right way so they make it to your new place without any damage.

Get the Right Supplies

First, collect strong moving boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap to keep your candles safe. You’ll also need some packing tape to seal the boxes and a marker to label them when you’re finished.

Wrap Each Candle Individually

Wrap each candle on its own—whether it’s a tealight, taper, votive or any other kind. This helps keep them from breaking or sticking together if they get warm. If you can, wrap candles and holders separately to protect them both.

For regular candles, wrap each one tightly in packing paper and tape the ends to keep it secure. If the candle is in a glass container, use bubble wrap instead of paper. This will protect the glass and also keep you safe in case it breaks during the move.

Pack Them in Boxes

Seal your boxes with strong packing tape so they stay firm. Put a couple of layers of packing paper at the bottom to add some padding. Then, gently place the wrapped candles inside and try not to make the box too heavy.

Add a layer of packing paper on top of each row of candles to give them extra protection. Also, make sure the candles and holders aren’t touching each other so they don’t get damaged.

Seal & Label the Boxes

After you’ve packed the candles, close the boxes tightly with packing tape. If the box is heavy, add extra tape to keep it from falling apart. Then, use a marker to clearly label the box and write that it has candles inside.

Keep Candles With You

Candles can melt easily if they get too hot especially in the back of a moving truck. To prevent that, take them with you in your car. Keep the AC on so they stay cool. As soon as you get to your new place, bring the candles inside right away and keep them away from sunlight or anything hot.
