Here are a few simple tips if you want to try this method:
- Pick a different color of packing tape for every room. For example, use red for the kitchen and green for the master bedroom. Let your kids help choose the colors—they might have fun with it. Don’t forget to pick colors for spaces like the master bathroom, guest bathroom, kids’ rooms, guest room, living room and laundry room. If you’re going to store certain items, choose a separate color just for those boxes.
- While packing, make sure you have enough of each color of tape within reach. You don’t want to pause everything just to get more. Running out and using the wrong color can cause a lot of confusion when it’s time to unpack!
- Even if you’re using color-coded tape, it’s still smart to write what’s inside each box on the top flap. This makes it much easier to find things you need right away—like pots and pans for cooking—so you’ll know exactly which box to grab.
- Make a master list. Take a sheet of paper and stick a small piece of each colored tape on it, then write down which room each color stands for. Put up a few copies of this list around your new place so the movers can easily tell where each box belongs.
- Stick a piece of the matching colored tape on the door of each room. Friends or movers helping you might not know which room is the kids’ room, office or guest room. This simple step makes it clear where each box should go.
- Put tape on more than one side of each box. It can be frustrating for movers to turn every box just to find the color. To make things simpler, stick a piece of tape on all sides. Just be sure the tape pieces are big enough to spot easily.
